Water

Next to air, water is the most important nutrient needed to sustain life. Water makes up approximately 70-75% of the body, and helps regulate body temperature, produce energy, and flush waste from the body. During exercise the body can lose up to 2 litres of water per hour.

It is very important to remain hydrated and drink lots of water in preparation for exercise. Rehydrate as necessary during exercise to replenish depleted water in the body. Don’t wait until you are thirsty before drinking, as by this time you are already dehydrated. Compared to other beverages cool water is most quickly absorbed by the body.

Many people do not drink enough water. 8 glasses of water a day is recommended, not taking exercise demands into consideration. For peak performance, a martial artist should be properly hydrated at all times. Poor hydration will result in fatigue, muscle soreness, and a slower recovery time from exercise.

Drinking adequate amounts of water will also regulate body weight. Water helps the body metabolize stored fat by helping flush the liver, which metabolizes fat. If the liver is not properly hydrated, the effectiveness of a fat burning workout are reduced.

Drinking enough water will also relieve fluid retention. When the body is low on fluids, it reacts by storing the fluid it does have. Thus fluid retention occurs. By drinking enough water, your body will not store the water and will not be pushed into a water famine situation.

Water also enables the body to eliminate waste and toxins. It flushes the kidneys and liver and helps them to expel the wastes collected in your body through your urine.

Remember, for peak performance in martial arts and life, drinking enough water is essential.
