Karate
The origin of today's four major Japanese karate-do systems
(Shoto-kan, Shito-ryu, Goju-ryu, and Wado-ryu)can be traced
to a group of islands known as the Ryukyu Island chain
during the 18th century. Located between Japan (North-East),
mainland China (West), and Taiwan (South-West), Okinawa,
the largest of the islands had an indigenous martial art
form that was being secretly practiced called 'TE' or
'HANDS'.

Kenpo/Kempo
The
history of Kenpo/Kempo is sketchy in its origins and
thus it is difficult to give an exact origin of the
style. What we do know is that Chinese martial arts,
called Chuan Fa, found it's way to Okinawa and Japan,
and that the martial art was called Kempo, or Law of
the Fist. It is believed that monks traveling through
China, Okinawa, and Japan brought with them Chuan Fa,
which is translated into Kempo in Japanese. Kempo would
have been taught as an addition to the spiritual traditions
of the monks.
